The Zimbabwe Online Content Creators (ZOCC) has voiced its concern following a statement from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) regarding their pursuit of Blessed Mhlanga, a journalist associated with HSTv. The police are reportedly seeking Mhlanga in connection with alleged violations of Section 164 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.
ZOCC, an association representing online content creators in Zimbabwe, is dedicated to promoting and protecting the rights of media practitioners. In a recent statement, the organization emphasized the critical importance of journalistic freedom, reiterating that journalism should not be criminalized.

“Journalism is not a crime,” ZOCC stressed, adding that the exercise of freedom of expression and the right to access information are fundamental rights protected by the Constitution of Zimbabwe under Sections 61 and 62. The association called on the ZRP to conduct any investigations with due respect for these rights, ensuring that actions taken against media practitioners do not inhibit their ability to perform their duties.

The organization expressed solidarity with Mhlanga and all journalists facing potential harassment or intimidation while carrying out their work. ZOCC advocates for a professional environment where journalists feel secure in their roles and responsibilities.

In their efforts to address the situation, ZOCC is engaging with key government officials, including Hon. Ziyambi Ziyambi, the Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, and Hon. Jenfan Muswere, the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services. The association commended these ministers for their commendable work in protecting and upholding journalists’ rights in the country.

“We have confidence in their ability to continue defending the right to access information and freedom of expression, as we have been fostering a positive working relationship,” ZOCC stated.
The ZOCC remains committed to working alongside authorities and stakeholders to create a safe and supportive environment for online content creators and journalists in Zimbabwe.

As this situation develops, ZOCC and its members continue to advocate for the protection of press freedom and the vital role that journalism plays in a democratic society.
