Harare, Zimbabwe – February 17, 2025
President Emmerson Mnangagwa today engaged editors from selected public and private media houses in an interactive session at State House, where he discussed the government’s progress and the country’s future direction.
The two-hour meeting, organized by the Department of Presidential Communications under Deputy Chief Secretary George Charamba, provided a platform for the President to address key national issues and engage with the media on topics ranging from the economy to the political landscape and the evolving media industry.
In his opening remarks, President Mnangagwa welcomed the editors, acknowledging the diversity within Zimbabwe’s media industry. “This is our first meeting, and I do so mindful of the fact that you represent different ownerships, editorial paths, and tendencies, which, in sum, constitute our national media industry,” he stated. Despite these differences, he underscored the importance of a unified media landscape that contributes to shaping national discourse and informing citizens about government policies and initiatives.
The President also addressed the shifting dynamics in the media industry, recognizing the transformative impact of technological advancements on traditional journalism. “The old media is dead, and with it, old models and ways of doing your craft,” Mnangagwa remarked.
He pointed out that even the government, which is traditionally resistant to change, has felt the effects of these technological shifts. He emphasized the importance for the media to adapt to evolving reader and viewer preferences influenced by digital trends.
In reflecting on the achievements of the Second Republic, Mnangagwa outlined significant milestones in key sectors such as infrastructure, mining, and agriculture. He reiterated the government’s commitment to economic growth, job creation, and improving the livelihoods of Zimbabweans.
The engagement marked a concerted effort by the government to foster dialogue with the media as Zimbabwe navigates both economic challenges and opportunities in a rapidly changing global environment.
The meeting concluded with an understanding of the crucial role that the media plays in informing the public and facilitating the government’s vision for Zimbabwe’s continued development.
