Media Laws Commendable But Zim Still Has A Long Way To Go

0

Laws are a great way to ensure stability and peace. They are the basis of modern-day democracies which is why they have been continuously amended to suit current situations.

The recent Access of Media and Information Act can be said to be a correction of laws like Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, the law ensures that people can exercise their constitutional right of access to information that is required for the protection of other rights.

The law will certainly ensure that information will be utilized for development as development communication can be improved. Community radio stations that have been licensed recently are a result of such laws and that is very important for community development.

Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Monica Mutsvagwa in her speech on the first September at the opening of the virtual journalism training programme, was quick to note that journalists have a social responsibility and she was firm about making sure that the atrocities of the Rwandan genocides should not be repeated.

Rodrik Mashingaidze, a former reporter for Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporations said that the law was a great opportunity for the improvement of media freedom and it would improve and ensure that the media reports freely and transparently.
Journalism students at the University of Zimbabwe also commended the law saying it would give them a chance as new journalists in the field to grow and do journalism by the book.

Yes! The media needs to be controlled to avoid unethical journalism but too much control kills the whole concept of objective and investigative journalism. We will only be left with propagandists!
Now that the elections are around the elections are almost at hand, such laws give us hope in terms of reporting because now citizen journalism can no longer be criminalized.

The law is a step towards improving the information sector but there are a lot of factors that still need attention if the concept of freedom of information is to be achieved.
