CineFAM Introduces THE WOMEN OF COLOUR CONTENT CREATOR DATABASE

TORONTO, CineFAM announces its new initiative, a Women of Colour (WOC) Content Creator Database. The database will be on CineFAM’s website.  CineFAM, is a Canadian not for profit initiative, founded by award-winning filmmaker and Academy member Frances Anne Solomon.  

CineFAM Initiative aims to build capacity and viability for women creators of colour and provide multiple platforms for this work to be shown. CineFAM works within the media industry to reduce systemic discrimination against gender and race through the promotion of women of Colour filmmakers.   

The overall goal of the WOC content creators database is to enhance the visibility of women of Colour in the film industry (directors, content creators, producers, screenplay writers, animators, motion design, etc.) in hopes of widening their networks and access to larger resources.

This is a path CineFAM has been on for the past five years. The database will consist of an abundance of Women of Colour Filmmakers and creators within the film industry.

This year CineFAM Film Festival celebrated its 5th year October 23rd-24th, 2021. under the theme, ”5 Years of Limitless Imagination” embodies this. CineFAM was established in 2016 by award-winning filmmaker and Academy member, Frances Anne Solomon.

The Film Festival introduced audiences around the globe to bold and original stories by women and non-binary creators of colour with a list of events and films which were both innovative and timely.

Abel Mavura is a journalist, editor, and writer whose work explores the intersections of cities, migration, and social justice. He tells stories about how people move, survive, and remake urban life under conditions of precarity, drawing on close field engagement and lived experience. Trained as a journalist at the Christian College of Southern Africa, Abel’s early work was rooted in media practice and community storytelling. Over time, his focus expanded into research and critical inquiry, allowing his writing to move fluidly between reportage, analysis, and long-form reflection. He is a graduate of Sciences Po Paris and is currently pursuing research at the University of Cambridge, where his work builds on earlier research into migration and informal housing. Abel is the author of three books, and his writing has appeared across platforms ranging from grassroots and community radio to international and policy-facing spaces. His work is grounded in clarity, ethical storytelling, and a commitment to centring voices often left out of mainstream narratives.
